A Day at the Pond

Today I went to Sugar Pond with my friend Cecilia. We brought some pretty long nets to catch frogs and tadpoles. I caught three bullfrogs and one painted turtle. The painted turtle was very heavy and I couldn't pick it up so I dropped it back in the water. I also saw a giant snapping turtle which had a very sharp beak and a worm-like tongue. I caught some tadpoles and one of them was injured because a frog had been biting on it's tail for food.

Through the binoculars, we saw a very big blue heron in the tree. We saw a Kingfisher dive down and catch a fish and fly up into a tree. It had black and blue wings and a white body and a long grey beak.

I fell in and got soaked in pond scum. I walked around the pond into some large reeds where I couldn't see over them and I got stuck in the middle. Finally I found my way out and caught a frog.

When I was there I saw my other friends Layla and Jordan.

  1. It was a great morning at Sugar Pond! Let's go back soon. By the way, I found one of the praying mantises on a bush at my house, and it has grown really big. I hope it stays on that bush so I can show you when you come over. Don't forget -- we'll try the insects in the dark project Tuesday night. Hopefully, it won't rain!

  2. Hi, Julian. I looked up the caterpillar you found yesterday. I think it is an American dagger moth caterpillar. If you go on www.whatsthiscaterpillar.com and click on the tufted caterpillar picture, you'll find it. It feeds on trees (the leaves, I guess). It didn't show a picture of what the actual moth looks like. Except for getting eaten by mosquitoes, that was really fun last night. I plan to try again, maybe later in the night, to see if any interesting moths come. See ya later. Cecilia
